  • Company: Plonk Wine Club
  • Available on:
  • Price Range: $49.99 – $249.99

What Are They About?

The focus of the Plonk wine club is on “artisanal, small batch, sustainably grown boutique wines from around the globe.”  Members are exposed to wines they might never find ordinarily.  Many of the wines are natural, some are biodynamic, and there are many varieties many have never heard of or tried.  In addition to these interesting ways of making selections, the club is interested in showing expression of terroir – and with wines coming from some of the most underexposed wine regions of the world members will definitely get an education in the many expressions of grapes.

Plonk offers curated shipments that are mixed, all red, or all white.  They also have options that explore three specific varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc.  The interesting thing about these last three clubs is that members receive a bottle of the named varietal but also a wine similar but made with another grape – thus truly embodying their focus on exposing drinkers to new things.

What You Get

Every month:

  • 2, 4, or 12 bottles of wines.
  • Two types of clubs – either a curated one or one based on varietal.  The curated box can be mixed, all red, or all white — member choice — and can be changed at any time.  The varietal based shipment comes with a bottle of either Cabernet, Pinot Noir, or Sauvignon Blanc (the member decides) and a bottle made from a different grape with similar attributes.
  • Tasting notes, pairing suggestions, and recipes custom matched to each month’s shipment.

Members also get:

  • A complimentary issue of IMBIBE magazine.
  • A gift of a Plonk corkscrew.
  • A free bottle of wine in the first shipment after renewing a subscription.
  • Discounts on orders of bottles received in shipments.
  • Single month, 3 month, 6 month and 12 month shipment options.

Many consumers appreciate the fact that Plonk focuses on smaller, artisanal wines that are natural, organic or biodynamic.  These wines are not always available in particular areas so the club brings them to everyone.

Why it Works & What Could be Better

Why it Works
  • Something For The Daring, and Not So Daring – Plonk allows members to get exposed to new wines from all over the world each month.  But, for those who are less experimental or with very specific tastes, they can stick to the grape variety they like each month while getting a similar wine.
  • Defined Focus – For wine lovers or those interested in wine who have a desire to stick to more natural, green options, this is the perfect club.  But that’s not the only focus – wine lovers who appreciate a particular varietal will also love being introduced to grapes that please their palate.
  • The Choice – There are excellent choices when it comes to the number of bottles, types of wines, and also the length of the membership without being overwhelming.
  • Free Shipping – Plonk includes shipping in the monthly cost so members always know exactly how much they will be charged each month.   This charge is the same no matter how many bottles are ordered.
  • Discounted

What Could be Better
  • Simpler Pricing Information – Each type of club shows the cost for a monthly, three month, six month and one year subscription which looks like there is a discount for ordering multiple months at once but there is not.
  • Geographical Areas That Can Receive Shipments – Plonk does not have a list of eligible states on their website.
  • Repeat Bottles – shipments of twelve contain three bottles of four different wines.

FAQ

faq  “Can I Order a Gift Subscription to Plonk?”

Yes.  Plonk suggests, as do we, that you notify the recipient of the gift and pass on all club information so that they can make sure someone over 21 is available to sign for the package.  There is a charge for having to resend the package.

faq  “Is There A Commitment?”

You can cancel your subscription to plonk at any time.  Additionally you can pay upfront for a three, six, or annual membership.

faq  “Can I join MORE Uncorked Where I Live?”

Plonk does not include a list of eligible states on their website – call or email them to find out whether or not they can ship to your home or office!

faq  “What Options Do I Have For My Shipment?  Do I have to get red and white wine?”

Plonk offers mixed, all red, and all white options for their curated wine club.

Conclusion

Plonk combines many of the attributes that make for a great wine club.  A fair price point for small batch, global wines combined with free shipping also means that this is a club that can easily fit into anyone’s budget.  Whether looking for drinkers of whites, reds, or both there is an option in the curated series.  Or, for drinkers who love a particular type of wine they can enjoy a bottle of their favorite varietal (Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc) and one additional bottle of a similar wine.

In addition to the great price, options, and ability to control the style of wines received, all wines featured are small batch, artisanal, sustainably grown, and often natural wines that are perfect for those who love trying unique wines, and eating and drinking green.
